GluCare Integrated Diabetes Center in Dubai, UAE, was recently awarded full URAC Accreditation in Remote Patient Monitoring for its Digital Therapeutics Program, a novel and innovative treatment concept for patients with diabetes and metabolic disorders. The Dubai Health Authority's (DHA) published strategy outlines the need for new innovative ways to deliver healthcare in Dubai, and recently requested that providers delivering solutions in digital health and telehealth seek accreditation as a means to guarantee high quality programs focused on safety, reliability, privacy and security.

GluCare partnered with URAC to become the first provider outside the United States to be accredited in Remote Patient Monitoring. GluCare’s physicians are specially trained in using artificial intelligence enhanced technology to treat and monitor patients with diabetes and assist them in managing their condition at the time they need them most, both remotely and in-clinic. URAC, a leading independent accrediting organization focused on supporting the quality of health care through leadership, accreditation, measurement and innovation, has given its seal of approval on Remote Patient Monitoring at GluCare.

'Existing methods for managing diabetics are not moving the needle in terms of clinical outcomes or costs. We believe the entire way diabetes is managed is ready for disruption. A key component of the GluCare model is that it utilizes remote patient monitoring and coaching be able to practice a continuous model of care, rather than an episodical, symptomatic 'snapshot' every 3 months.' said Dr. Ihsan Almarzooqi, Co-founder and Managing Director of GluCare. ' Providers need to manage patients at all times, not just a few times per year. Our mission is to re-invent the care model of diabetes.'

Many factors have contributed to the global increase of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and metabolic disorders worldwide. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), rapid urbanization and socioeconomic development has led to an increased prevalence of diabetes, reported by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) as reaching 16.3% [1,2]. In line with global patterns, adherence to recommended diabetes management in the UAE remains a challenge with low compliance [1,5]. Clinical inertia, ineffective health system programs, lack of performance-based reimbursement models, and outdated communication tools for physicians and patients are responsible for diabetes treatment failure for many years.

“By earning Remote Patient Monitoring Accreditation from URAC, GluCare operates on the forefront of health care delivery,” said URAC President and CEO Shawn Griffin, M.D. “Meeting URAC’s RPM standards demonstrates that GluCare leverages technologies to advance high quality care that promotes clinical best practices, consumer protections and care continuity among patients and providers.”

'Our results speak for themselves. On average we are able to reduce Hb1Ac by 1.7% points in just 90 days, with significant reductions in other parameters such as LDL, Uric acid, weight, and triglycerides. This would not be possible using existing traditional models of diabetes care.' mentioned Dr. Almarzooqi.

The GluCare Digital Therapeutics (DTx) model was designed to correct deficiencies in the existing diabetes management process. Traditional diabetes care models include spending less than 15 minutes with a physician 4 times a year, in an episodical model of care. GluCare has reinvented the way diabetes is managed by creating a “continuous” approach using Integrated Continuous Monitoring (ICM) meaning care continues between clinic visits.

Using the GluCare DTx methodology, the patient receives a band associated with the GluCare app and other connected devices such as BGM, CGM, weight scale, or even BP cuff. Through these, and the chat function associated with the app, the patient is in constant contact with the care team between visits. The proprietary GluCare portal/dashboard is the centerpiece of the GluCare digital therapeutics platform and integrates both EMR data and any data collected remotely to assist physicians to fully manage patients. The program also uses artificial intelligence to further assist the human care team in understanding disease risk stratification for 18 different co-morbidity conditions that are prevalent amongst diabetics.

Coaches are essential to the success of the GluCare program. Coaches meet the patient at the initial visit, explain the GluCare program, and support them through their journey. The entire care team monitors the patient RPM data between visits and provides support along the journey through a chat function. In addition, progressive yearlong educational programs using behavioral change theories, and guided by CDC, ADA, AHA and other internationally recognized entities, enable GluCare to provide comprehensive care to our patients both in the clinic and between visits.
