Abu Dhabi: The UAE will begin mandatory application of the unit "gram / milliliter" in the perfume trade in all of the country’s markets, starting tomorrow, Thursday, February 20, 2020, which is considered a "historical change" in the culture of dealing with the units of measurement used in the markets.

In the direction of the Emirates authority for Standardization and Metrology "ESMA", in terms of the quality infrastructure, through which the authority proves its leading national capabilities.

Eng. Amina Zainal, Director of Metrology Department at ESMA, stressed that the complementary work between the institutions of the federal and local government and the private sector directly contributes to enhancing the competitiveness of the UAE.

The UAE has jumped two places, in the Global Competitiveness Index 2019, according to the global report issued by the World Economic Forum (Davos), maintaining its position among the most competitive global economies.

The Tula unit was used in the year 1833 in India, which it moved with merchants to the UAE, and is used in perfumes, however, after the change to be applied tomorrow (Thursday), ESMA aims to protect the consumer by ensuring that it uses units of measurement globally recognized.

Also, in addition to reducing technical barriers to perfume dealers, which is estimated at 8 billion dirhams, as well as the use of internationally accepted measurement standards.

Zainal said: The authority also launched a website in five languages that are in use, and forms the most used languages among the communities in the UAE, and between merchants, suppliers and perfume sellers in the country, to educate consumers about the actual values of transfer between the unit of Tula and grams / milliliters (www.tulachange.ae).

We have developed for this a set of awareness steps for the targeted segments, including launching an awareness campaign on social media platforms, and a similar campaign on radio networks, as well as national media, In addition to launching an informative website for consumers and merchants.

The historical change came in response to the UAE’s orientations towards unifying the national measurement units with the internationally recognized units of the international system “SI units” as a basis for the units of measurement that should be used exclusively in the country.

The change will be in the interest of the consumer and the merchant alike, in terms of paying the actual value the quantity purchased of perfume or incense, oud and others.

Before the mandatory application, ESMA has implemented during the past six months, awareness workshops for perfume dealers in the UAE, in conjunction with a similar deadline granted to dealers to reconcile their conditions, in order to inform them of the new changes represented in replacing the tula unit with grams "milliliters", and to ensure Full information access to them.
