More than 150 Middle East shipping industry professionals gathered last week at the Taj Dubai Hotel for a technical meeting to learn more about emerging technologies for navigation, communication and security in ship operations.
The session was hosted jointly by Elcome International and the UAE Branch of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST).
“New technologies working with skilled and experienced professionals will bring improved levels of safety, lower levels of emissions and higher revenues than we see now,” said Nikeel Idnani, Honorary Secretary of IMarEST UAE. “The willingness to engage with bold, revolutionary ideas such as emerging technologies are key drivers behind a company’s progressive outlook, creating high economic value.”
Expert speakers from Elcome and its partner organizations gave presentations on the state-of-the-art in new technologies and how shipping companies can best employ these new high-tech tools of the trade.
Ryo Yajima of JRC Alphatron Marine spoke on “Enhancing Safety and Efficiency through Digital Navigation.” Andreas Luteberget, of Global Eagle, presented “The Connected Ship: Why, How and What?” followed by his associate Benny Retnamony, who discussed “An Overview of Hybrid Networks and How IMO Might Drive It to Be the Standard for Increasing Levels of Autonomy in Shipping.” The final presentation was given by Elcome’s Kostiantyn Matvieiev, who spoke on “Cyber Security on the Bridge” with practical reference to risks when transferring files on navigation equipment and provided a description of Elcome’s new cyber security software.
An open Q&A panel discussion concluded the evening. The panelists agreed that maritime businesses should embrace technology rather than fear it. Jimmy Grewal, Executive Director of Elcome International, emphasized, “Technology should be an enabler. Digitalization can take operational efficiency to the next level for shipping companies committed enough to make the effort to make it work for them.”
