Chairman of Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) Dr Eng Rashid Al Leem received the prestigious 2017 Global Environment Award from the New Delhi-based Global Environment and Energy Foundation (GEEF).

The GEEf honoured Dr Al Leem in recognition of his role in launching innovative initiatives in the field of energy and for his outstanding  and leading role in achieving sustainable development and preservation of the environment.

The Global Environment Awards, organised by the Energy And Environment Foundation, recognises outstanding contribution by individuals, team, unit, region / project and organisation and honours them for their excellent contributions, commitment professionalism and actions that have made a positive impact on the environment.

Global Environment Awards recognises those who have helped improve the management of natural resources, demonstrated new ways to tackle climate change or raise awareness of emerging environmental challenges as it serves as an inspiration for the transformative action, business excellence and environment management across the world.

The GEEF award is very important as energy is the lifeblood of modern economies. By 2050, around 10 billion people will be living on this planet and eEnergy requirements will increase manifold. Expanding reliable and affordable supplies of energy will support industry, modern agriculture, increased trade, improved transportation, expanded communications, health, cutting-edge medical equipment and procedures and much more. These are building blocks of economic growth that create jobs that help people escape poverty and create better lives for their children.

For these reasons and more, energy issues are vitally important and demand our understanding and so awards to stalwarts like Dr Al Leem have greater emphasis on his declared global mission ‘Sustainability.’

Dr Al Leem, reacting to the award, said that he was “delighted with this honour” and pointed to the importance of concerted international efforts to achieve sustainable development and the preparation of leading cadres in all fields, notably energy and water areas.

He pointed out that environmental leadership initiatives in Sharjah in particular and the UAE in general have the support of the wise leadership of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. He is the first who recognised that the environment had a significant impact and contributed to the development and the launch of a lot of initiatives in the field of preserving the environment and achieving sustainable development by launching leadership programmes at local and  international levels.

He added that Sewa had made achievements at the local, regional and international arena which reflect the level of interest and commitment to its role in the care of the environment and the implementation of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development Goals, and to support and encourage outstanding environmental works of nationals and individual and collective initiatives that contributed to sustainability of natural resources and energy.

Dr Al Leem lauded Dr Anil Razan, Head of Energy and Environment Foundation of the Indian Government and its achievements.

Dr Razan also highlighted Dr Al Leem’s contribution to excellence in the field of sustainable development and the preparation of leading cadres through cognitive publications and innovative initiatives. He also underlined the initiatives and implementation of sustainable projects by Sewa through Leem Knowledge Centre in all fields.

He stressed that the ongoing work of Dr Rashid Al Leem make it worth his choice to win the Excellence Award for 2017 from the Energy Foundation.
