Dubai, United Arab Emirates: 12 July 2014: DAMAC Properties Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Hussain Sajwani, has handed over a AED One Million donation to the UAE Suqia (Water Aid) Campaign, as part of the Ramadan charitable giving programme.
The initiative was launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai to provide access to fresh drinking water for five million people around the world who suffer from shortage of potable water.
"According to the World Health Organisation, there are 780 million people in the world without access to clean water," said Mr. Sajwani. "We must do something to help. DAMAC Properties is pleased to be able to make a small difference to this worthy cause and thanks His Highness Sheikh Mohammed for bringing this important campaign to the attention of the world, particularly during the Holy month of Ramadan."
The donation by DAMAC Properties, which will save the lives of 40,000 people without water, is part of the company's commitment to support the Government of Dubai's efforts to help those less well off around the world.
The money raised will be used to build wells, install pumps and provide water purification equipment that will benefit millions of people in developing countries.
The World Health Organisation added that about 3.4 million people die every year due to water, sanitation and hygiene-related causes, with nearly all of the deaths occurring in the developing world.
The campaign is being launched in collaboration with the UAE Red Crescent. Mohamed Abdullah Al Haj Al Zarouni, General Manager of Dubai Branch said: "the campaign is getting closer to reaching its objective of AED 125 Million, in order to provide potable water for five million people. The teams of the Red Crescent started the excavation work of wells in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Irbil-Kurdistan-Iraq, and Tanzania. This campaign will reach 61 countries, and this humanitarian achievement carries the finger prints of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, may God protect him."
