Abu Dhabi: Corniche Hospital, part of Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, (SEHA) – the UAE’s largest healthcare network, continues to make a positive and memorable impact on woman’s health by providing life-changing care for women diagnosed with complex endometriosis.
Endometriosis can occur in women anytime from puberty until the age of menopause and is a disorder in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, involving most commonly the ovaries, the fallopian tubes and the tissue lining the pelvis. In rare cases, endometrial-like tissue may spread to other distant organs beyond the pelvic area, such as such the lungs or the belly button.
A chronic disease that affects more than 170 million women worldwide, symptoms of endometriosis include pelvic pain (especially during menstrual periods), irregular periods, and pain with bowel movement and urination. It takes women an average of 3 to 11 years from the time their symptoms start until they are diagnosed. Hormone treatments or the removal of the endometriosis lesions by laparoscopic surgery are the two alternative approaches to treating endometriosis.
Dr. Georges Botros, Consultant Gynecologist and Master Surgeon in minimally invasive gynecology at Corniche Hospital, said, “It is important for patients to consult their doctor if they experience any of the symptoms that may indicate endometriosis, because early diagnosis is key to reducing the risk of endometriosis progression and it may also result in better management of the symptoms.”
Dr. Jed Hawe, Chief of Gynecology at Corniche Hospital, said, “Our team of experts have performed more than 300 minimally-invasive procedures in the past two years, including more than 130 endometriosis cases, and we are committed to providing our patients with the optimum quality of care for the diagnosis and treatment of all stages of endometriosis.”
Anu Savio Thelly, a 35 years old palliative care trainer, has lived with endometriosis since the age of fourteen.
“I suffered from pain for 6 years before I got diagnosed with endometriosis at the age of 20. Since then I’ve experienced lots of ups and downs and I have been given pain killers and hormones that helped manage my condition and sometimes soothed the pain.
But lately the pain became unbearable, I almost couldn’t breathe nor eat, I lost weight and was bloated all the time; I sometimes felt like fainting from the pain.
My search led me to Corniche hospital and Doctor Botros who successfully performed a laparoscopic surgery on me and removed the lesions.
I resumed my normal life and I am grateful for the excellent care I got. it feels great to be delivered from pain.
Endometriosis can also lead to infertility, with studies indicating that 30% of women who suffer from similar symptoms and experience difficulty conceiving were found to have endometriosis. For patients who suffer from infertility due to endometriosis, removal of the lesions laparoscopically significantly improves their chances for pregnancy.
Females experiencing any of the aforementioned symptoms are encouraged to book an appointment by calling 800 50, through the SEHA App, or via SEHA’s WhatsApp channel on 02 410 2200.
