Beirut/Sana’a: The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Regional office for West Asia and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Yemen signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on achieving a more sustainable and climate resilient Yemen for present and future generations.
The MoU aims to help Yemen strengthen adaptation and mitigation to climate change, restore and preserve its biodiversity, and manage post conflict pollution and emergencies in sound manners.
"Environment is not a problem to solve, but a precious resource to preserve. This Memorandum of Understanding is one further step towards realizing our shared vision and determination to act towards building a sustainable and resilient future for the people of Yemen and for the planet." said Sami Dimassi, the UNEP Representative and Regional Director for West Asia.
“It is critical that we work together with all Yemeni stakeholders to address climate-related challenges in Yemen,” says Zena Ali Ahmad, UNDP’s Resident Representative in Yemen. “As the situation is likely to continue to worsen with the current financial and economic situation, it is critical that UNDP and UNEP collaborate to help improve resilience to climate change.”
UNDP Yemen and UNEP West Asia will provide a range of programmatic and operational support at the national and sub-national levels to achieve environmental sustainability, climate policy adoption, biodiversity mainstreaming, waste management, and battling pollution. The focus of both organizations will be in the following areas: (a) environmental disaster preparedness and response; (b) climate change; biodiversity and ecosystems; (c) pollution and waste management; and (d) financial and economic transformations.
As Yemen faces one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, millions need humanitarian aid. This partnership will be critical in providing more support for people facing and adapting to climate change and challenged by increased environmental issues.
