In view of the budget for Financial Year 2021-2022, Rs 1 million has been provided under “Grant to Classified Museums” so as to ensure the survival of classified museums. In that context, a handing over ceremony of cheques to four classified museums, still in operation under the Mauritius Museums Council Act, was held, today, at the Musée de la Petite Collection, in Rose Belle.
The Minister of Arts and Cultural Heritage, Mr Avinash Teeluck, the Minister of Financial Services and Good Governance, Mr Mahen Kumar Seeruttun, and other eminent personalities attended the ceremony.
The four museums received cheques as follows: Musée de la Petite Collection – Rs 300,000; Musée de la Photographie – Rs 300,000; Sir Moi Lin Jean Ah Chuen Memorial Centre – Rs 200,000; and Jewish Detainees Memorial and Information Centre – Rs 200,000.
In his address, Minister Teeluck highlighted that the cheques remitted to the representatives of the four museums aim at supporting and enabling them to cover their operational costs, to purchase appropriate equipment to control environmental factors, to restore artefacts, and to upgrade display of exhibits. This endeavour results from representations made by private museums to Government prior to budget 2021-2022, and sets the scene for enhanced future collaboration, he pointed out.
This collaboration between Government and private museums, underlined Minister Teeluck, will ensure that there is a sustainability in the conservation of the cultural heritage of the country.
On another note, he appealed to the population to collaborate with Government and observe all sanitary measures, especially during the end of year festive season, so as to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 locally.
For his part, Minister Seeruttun underscored the importance of preserving the cultural heritage of the country and commended the representatives of the four private museums for their contribution in this sector. He also dwelt on the COVID-19 situation in the country and on the need to strictly abide by the sanitary protocol in place in order to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
