Dubai: The British University in Dubai (BUiD) held the concluding ceremony of its Sustainability Spring School 2019 (BUiD SSS) in the presence of His Excellency Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi Minister of Climate Change and Environment, and His Excellency Saif Humaid Al Falasi, Group CEO of ENOC, at its Campus in Dubai International Academic City.
In his opening remarks His Excellency Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi said that the UAE's leadership has always supported youth development encouraging them to utilize available opportunities and resources to create a better future for everyone.
“The UAE's commitment to the youth is two-fold. The first is to educate them and equip them with knowledge and know-how and the second is to empower them to think of innovative solutions to tackle pressing challenges. Initiatives such as this in the education sector are fundamental to ensure that tomorrow's leaders are resilient, innovative and resourceful," he added.
Prof. Abdullah Alshamsi, BUiD’s Vice Chancellor, welcomed His Excellency Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, His Excellency Saif Humaid Al Falasi and the guests. He said, “We are proud to say that BUiD is committed to sustainable environment, and this event comes as a way of encouraging students and stakeholders to participate in this platform and get engaged in innovation and creativity through design competitions and other similar activities.”
Sponsored by the Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC), the BUiD SSS was organised under the theme “Green Bridge” and aimed to give students a better understanding of sustainability. More than 60 students from the United Arab Emirates, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom, China and Singapore participated.
Students were engaged in a wide range of activities including seminars, debates, roundtable discussions, competitions and site visits. They visited DEWA Sustainable Building in Al Quoz, Sustainable City, Zayed Desert Learning Centre and UAE University. Participants were divided into 7 teams which competed to win the best design of Future Petrol Station .Teams’ designs were very creative and innovative. The winning team for the best design was chosen by a judging panel that included His Excellency Saif Al Falasi, Dr. Waddah Ghanem, Sr. Director Sustainability, Operational & Business Excellence and other members from the ENOC management team, along with Prof. Abdullah Alshamsi, BUiD’s Vice Chancellor and Prof. Bassam Abu Hijleh, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and IT.
Commenting on the high quality of the contestants’ designs, His Excellency Saif Humaid Al Falasi said, “I am thrilled to see our youth’s vision of the future illustrated through these creative concepts. Sustainability and innovation are two components of the UAE’s wise leadership and are key priorities for ENOC. Looking at these master pieces is a testament of the youth’s ability to incorporate best practices in sustainability and design to offer cutting edge technologies and innovative solutions, that definitely puts is on the right track towards a better future.”
Dr Hanan Taleb, Associate Professor of Sustainable Design of the Built Environment at BUiD, founder of BUiD SSS, commented: “we have started the Sustainability School in 2012 and every year we witnessed its success through the growing numbers of participants. I am very proud to see the participants’ enthusiasm, which was reflected in the amazing projects they have produced. This success gives us the motivation to host this event every year”
