Beirut: The Calcium Metabolism and Osteoporosis Program (CaMOP) Bone Mineral Densitometry Unit at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) achieved the coveted accreditation on October 7th by the largest densitometry organization worldwide, making it the FIRST and ONLY accredited facility outside the United States by the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD).
The CaMOP faculty and staff have been individually accredited since 2002, and the program has been conducting ISCD densitometry certification courses for physicians and technicians for the past 12 years. This accreditation reflects the high standards and excellence in quality assurance measures that the Bone Mineral Density Unit at AUBMC has been adopting.
The standards span from scan acquisition to analysis and reporting, which are essential to ensure accuracy in diagnosis. They also set the stage for the best treatment measures tailored to each patient’s case. With the acquisition of this accreditation, AUBMC provides a further attestation to providing validation of the Medical Center’s quality assurance standards.
“Our mission is to promote excellence in clinical care, research, and education in disorders of calcium and bone metabolism; achieving the coveted accreditation is a confirmation that our program has and continues to meet the highest academic and clinical standards in achieving its mission,” said Professor and Director of the CaMOP at AUB, Dr. Ghada El-Hajj Fuleihan. “This ISCD accreditation validates the CaMOP’s position as a Center of Excellence and as a pioneer in Lebanon, the region, and the world,” she added.
Dr. Asma Arabi, Associate Professor, and Assistant Director of the CaMOP at AUB said, “The faculty and staff have been individually accredited since 2002, reaffirming their expertise in the field; and the receipt of this accreditation is proof knowledge implementation by the whole team.”
ISCD is the leading membership organization for professionals working to assess, monitor and treat skeletal health. Its ISCD Facility Accreditation Program (FAP) comes about from over 20 years of educating and advocating for quality in the field of skeletal health assessment. ISCD’s mission statement is to advance excellence in the assessment of skeletal health.
AUBMC is the only medical institution in the Middle East to have earned the five international accreditations of the Joint Commission International (JCI), Magnet (Magnet Recognition Program®), the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the American Council for Graduate Medical Education-International (ACGME-I) and the Joint Accreditation Committee for EBMT and ISCT Europe (JACIE). In addition to the honor of the Meritorious Outcomes with the American College of Surgeons attesting to its superior standards in patient-centered care, nursing, and pathology/laboratory services. With the new accreditation, AUBMC spears ahead with yet another achievement.
