Dubai, United Arab Emirates - Al Naboodah Group Enterprises (ANGE), the management company for one of the UAE’s oldest and most respected family conglomerates, is the proud recipient of its first sustainability award at the Gulf Sustainability and CSR Awards Ceremony 2018 in the ‘Sustainable Business Model’ category.
The Gulf Sustainability and CSR Awards recognise companies who have launched outstanding sustainability and CSR initiatives across the region. ANGE was selected from a competitive pool of top industry performers.
This achievement comes in tandem with the release of the Group’s second sustainability report. This year’s edition, even more comprehensive than the 2016 report, is in accordance with Global Reporting Initiative’s (GRI) sustainability standards and demonstrates ANGE’s accomplishments in implementing sustainable practices in line with the pillars of the UAE’s Vision 2021.

Our second sustainability report demonstrates our sustainability performance and transformation in 2017.

The report includes data across the following areas:
Reinvesting in the UAE
During the year, focus was on engaging with ANGE stakeholders in order to promote wider sustainability efforts.
In October 2017, the company hosted its’ first-ever Al Naboodah Construction Group supply chain conference for over 150 strategic suppliers and principal partners. The objective of the event was to create a platform to openly discuss best practices in sustainable and ethical supply chain management, and to elaborate on a newly issued supply chain charter and codes of conduct. So far, 88 per cent of Al Naboodah Construction Group suppliers signed the supply charter.
Targeted Emiratisation recruitment programme
In accordance with targets set out for 2017, ANGE has started implementing its Emiratisation strategy and launched its Emirati internship programme. In the past year, there has been a 53 per cent increase in the total number of Emiratis employed in the organisation. For 2018, the Group will aim to hire 60 UAE Nationals by the end of the year.
Health and safety
In 2017, as a Group wide priority, there were even more significant developments made to further enhance employee health and safety standards. There was a 44.5 per cent reduction in total number of Lost Time Injuries from 2016 to 2017 and a 26.7 per cent reduction in Total Lost Day Rate. Zero workplace related fatalities were recorded in 2017.
To continue setting industry benchmarks for health and safety, ANGE introduced new leading indicators like the Near Miss Reporting Frequency Rate. Additionally, a number of Visible Felt Leadership tours were conducted to assess work place environment. In addition, a new health and safety employee charter containing employee rights and employer’s responsibilities was developed.
ANGE workers can obtain free medical, dental and eye check-ups. Clinics and an occupational health nurse present at employee villages ensure well-being. This year, a new medical clinic was also opened at the Al Ruwayyah base.
Environment
In 2017, 57 per cent of the non-hazardous waste was recycled and diverted from landfills, exceeding the initial target by 27 per cent.
ANGE has also taken steps over the course of the year to establish a strong foundation for reducing environmental impact with energy and water audits conducted across the company. Recorded consumption levels for 2017 will act as a baseline for curtailing consumption this year with the aim to reduce electricity usage by 5 to 10 per cent and water consumption by 10 per cent.
The Group also plans to implement an energy management system in accordance with ISO 50001 criteria.
Community programmes
Overall, there was an 11% increase in community investments by ANGE, which includes voluntary contributions of funds to the broader community. A new employee-volunteering scheme was launched during the year, under which employees receive time off work to engage in meaningful community activities. ANGE also conducted a number of road safety campaigns over the course of 2017.
The company has developed a new social impact assessment tool that analyses, monitors and manages intended and unintended social consequence of planned projects before the construction is initiated.
Employee satisfaction
As testament to the efforts by ANGE to promote employee welfare, the company received the Ministry of Human Resources & Emiratisation’s first ever ‘Happiest Work Environment award’ which supports Dubai’s ambition to become the world’s happiest city. In addition, the Group was awarded a four star-rating from Taqdeer Awards for worker welfare excellence.
Towards the end of the year, the company recorded a 93 per cent overall employee satisfaction rate by respondents in an employee engagement survey while 90 per cent of staff agreed that they were engaged with the Group’s sustainability goals.
Gender diversity
ANGE also registered 15 per cent of new hires as female, in line with its gender diversity goals. This exceeded its initial target of 10 per cent set out in 2016.
Career development & learning
During 2017, the company recorded an increase of 75 per cent increase in training hours logged in by employees compared to 2016. In addition, 6,300 workers were trained at the in-house City & Guilds accredited trade school that serves to develop talent and upskill employees.
