The Opening of electricity transmission station serving Terminal 2

ABB Egypt, power and electrification technology leader inaugurated one of the most important electricity transmission power stations serving expected loads for new Terminal (2) at Cairo airport with capacity of 3*40 MVA and voltage of 66/11 kV.

The new power station works as a catalyst to increase capacity and improve the efficiency and advance the performance of transmission and distribution networks in Terminal 2 at Cairo Airport and accommodate the increasing numbers of passengers, using ABB high-technology in the field of electricity transmission.

The opening was attended by Mr. Sherif Fathy, Minister of Civil Aviation and Prof/ Magdi Isaac Chairman of the holding company for Cairo Airport, Eng/ Gamal Abdel-Rahim Head of the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, Eng/ Gamal Abdel Nasser Freelance member of the Northern Region of the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company,  Mr. Tariq Tawfiq President of the Cairo Electricity Company, Eng/ Suleiman Mansour Sector Head of HV projects at Cairo Electricity Co., Ms. Eng / Azza Al-Ghannam Head of the HV projects Cairo Electricity Co., and a number of senior representatives of the ministry of Electricity and the Holding Company of Cairo Airport in addition to officials and engineers from ABB Egypt and members of the media.

"The opening of the new station comes within the ongoing improvement efforts of the Cairo International Airport, in the goal of making it one of the world-class airports. The new power station is considered a major step on the way of the ongoing progress and development endeavors deployed for the betterment of Cairo Airport, Egypt's first gateway to all visitors and expatriates from various countries of the world", said Prof. Magdi Isaac, Chairman of the Holding Company for Cairo International Airport commenting on the opening of the new power station.

He explained that the new power station (66/11 kv) serves as one of the main electricity transmission power stations to strengthen the cables of nearly 11 kilometers and will serve part of terminal (2), and terminal (3), the investment zones, Le Meridian Hotel and any future expansion projects for Cairo Airport. A protocol will be signed with the Ministry of Electricity to sell the electricity surplus from the new station.

We have succeeded in delivering this power station thanks to our significant domain knowledge and project management skills across the value chain including design, engineering, installation and commissioning including civil works in collaboration with the engineering team of Cairo International Airport," said Mr. Naji Jrejiri, ABB Managing Director for Egypt, North & Central Africa.


"We cannot talk about successful investments in Egypt today if we did not believe in the future for our operations in Egypt. The execution of this power station comes as a proof of the efforts deployed by the Egyptian government to upgrade the national grid referring to well-established and experienced companies working in Egypt to achieve the strategic futuristic energy goals and execute national projects that serve the travel and tourism sector in Egypt," added Naji.

It is worth mentioning that ABB Egypt has recently signed a purchase contract for a new building in New Cairo to become the new administrative headquarters for the company valued at EGP 150 million. This new building comes as a confirmation of the company's commitment to the Egyptian market stressing on the importance of Egypt as a regional hub for export to African and Middle Eastern markets. At the end of the ceremony, Prof. Magdy Isaac gave thanks to ABB Egypt for all their efforts deployed to execute the project expressing their eagerness for more mutual cooperation in the near future.

ABB Egypt has undertaken the execution of Mall of Egypt's transformers power station with voltage 66/22 KV and capacity of 3*25 MVA and is currently working on the implementation of Almaza Mall's gas isolated transformers power station with voltage 66/11 KV and capacity of 2*40 MVA. That in addition to other projects implemented by ABB in Egypt, including among many others, the power generation station for the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza as well as transformers station that feeds the Cairo Festival City in New Cairo.
