JAKARTA- Operational activities at the nickel smelting hub in Morowali, on Indonesia's Sulawesi island were not affected by earthquakes that hit the area in the early hours of Monday, a company official said.
Indonesia's meteorology agency BMKG's said at least three tremors were felt near Morowali on Monday with magnitudes of up to 4.9.
Morowali is Indonesia's top nickel processing centre where companies such as Tsingshan Holding Group operate their smelters in an industrial park run by PT Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP).
"Operations are generally unaffected. Production continues," an IMIP spokesman said in a text message.
Minor damage occurred at an IMIP building, he said, where there were some cracks on the walls and a window was broken.
