Muscat: Several children, including a one-month-old infant, infected with the Covid-19 virus, are being treated at the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, a report by Oman TV said.

Dr. Raghad Al Abdwani, Senior Consultant of Pediatric Intensive Care at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, said: “There are children infected with Covid-19 in the observation department and in the ward.” She added: “The ages of the children, hospitalised in the paediatric department range between one month to 16 years.”

She continued, "Most of the children in our observation department either have chronic diseases because of the presence of a virus, whether Covid-19 or others, which causes complications in their cases." For example, people with epilepsy, when infected with Covid-19, have muscle spasms multiply. People with asthma and pneumonia may need external breathing assistance.

Dr. Farouk Youssef, an internal medicine specialist at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, said: “The rate of hospitalisation as a result of infection with Covid-19 is approximately two cases per day, but the duration of stay for patients is lower than the previous periods, ranging from 3 to 6 days.”

Latest statistics indicate that more than 13,000 new infections have been recorded since the beginning of February in Oman, and 26 deaths.
