Oman continues to be on the United Kingdom’s Red list, disappointing many travellers who were expecting the sultanate to be shifted to Amber list. The UK ambassador to Oman has, however, said that the embassy is working with the Omani authorities on the issue.

Only British or Irish National, or those having residence rights in the UK are allowed in if they are travelling from the countries on the Red list. Passengers, however, have to take a pre-departure COVID-19 test, book a quarantine hotel package, including two COVID-19 tests and complete a passenger locator form. While anyone from the Amber list countries can travel to the UK provided he/she takes a pre-departure COVID-19 test, book and pay for COVID-19 tests - to be taken after arrival in England and complete a passenger locator form.

H E Hamish Cowell, ambassador of the UK to Oman, in an open letter to people of Oman said that he knows many in Oman, whether British nationals, Omani students preparing to study in the UK, or others, “will have been disappointed to see that travel restrictions to the UK remain in place following the latest review”.

He added that he “understands that disappointment”. The Joint Biosecurity Center (JBC) assessment process is highly detailed, and covers a range of issues including genomic sequencing capability, COVID-19 transmission risk and variant transmission risk, he added.

“I wanted to assure you that the embassy is working exceptionally closely with the Omani authorities and in particular the Ministry of Health to make progress on this issue.” Under the guidance of the Supreme Committee, he said Oman has made good progress in bringing the latest wave under control.
