Three people were killed following a collision between two vehicles on Muscat-Salalah road, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) said on Tuesday.

The accident took place on the Adam-Haima road towards the Dhofar Governorate.

According to eyewitnesses, traffic was disrupted on the main road as the police aviation also carried out the transfer of three people in critical condition to Nizwa Reference Hospital.

It may be noted that speed has been the reason for 198 of the 371 deaths due to road accidents reported in 2020, followed by negligence (56), according to ROP.

With airfares to Salalah from Muscat hovering around RO 34, more people are travelling by road to Salalah with their families.

Visitors are flocking to Dhofar Governorate to enjoy the khareef season with Salalah clocking temperatures in the twenties.

While it is an ideal time to head to the governorate to beat the stress of the pandemic, one should take note of the timings of night lockdown, follow Covid protocol, and ensure safe driving while enjoying the season.

Lt Col Sulaiman bin Saeed al Jabri, Director of Operations at the Dhofar Governorate Command, says police have activated control points in the wilayats of Thamrait, Hasik, and Harit area to regulate the entry of citizens and residents into the governorate.

He added that only vaccinated tourists are requested to enter the governorate according to the decision announced by the Supreme Committee.

Lt Col Al Jabri said there have been issues such as gathering of a large number of motorcyclists in residential neighbourhoods and rural areas in some locations, and some of them even resorted to drifting and indulging in vandalism on the grass.

The ROP said it has been taking all preventive measures to regulate traffic on roads leading to tourist sites and urged the public not to gather and crowd at any place.

Once in Salalah one has to bear in mind to be careful and maintain distance between vehicles while driving through fog, mist or drizzle.

What drivers must remember is the daily traffic Salalah experiences that has been defined as heavy due to tourists in town trying to wrap up the day tips before the lockdown time.
