Hundreds of nurses in Abu Dhabi are being trained remotely and equipped with relevant skills as health authorities prepare a big medical workforce to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.

The Department of Health in Abu Dhabi (DoH) said it was providing training lessons to the nurses through a remote mechanism. The DoH is also using resident doctors in Abu Dhabi's medical colleges to work with first-class doctors in hospitals so as to enhance the medical teams and make them ready for quick response during emergency situations.

Officials said they are also allowing doctors on excellence programmes to participate under the same umbrella as physician assistants, in line with the precautionary plans aimed at ensuring the health sector's continued response to the spread of the Covid-19 with professionalism and commitment.

The department explained that it was working in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA) to train 1,000 nurses during the current period, in order to enhance their efficiency and improve their skills. The training is in three categories, including theoretical, practical and field practices as authorities endeavour to attract new talents to the health sector workforce in the emirate.

Officials said the health department has introduced the remote training mechanism for nurses to ensure their safety given the current Covid-19 situation. Some of the existing training programmes have been replaced with remote training.

The department highlighted that health professionals are exempted from the requirement of CME hours during the current period.

The health regulators explained that any health professional can apply for a temporary licence from the DoH provided that the minimum requirements for the licence are met.

Volunteering and part-time work

The DoH has called on healthcare providers and cadres who wish to work or volunteer, whether full or part time, to support medical cadres to register in the new free health workforce management system in Abu Dhabi, if they have sufficient time and efficiency.

The health department has identified a number of categories that can register in the portal and volunteer, including full-time or part-time workers in clinics or hospitals in the region, who have time to work overtime.
