The State Council discussed on Monday the draft law on ‘Selective Goods Tax’ referred by the Council of Ministers, the report of the Economic Committee and the report of Majlis Al Shura on the law.

Dr. Yahya bin Mahfoudh Al Mantheri, Chairman of State Council, opened the 12th ordinary session of the Council with a speech in which he reviewed the agenda of the session.

He said that it will be devoted to discussing the draft law on Selective Goods Tax, referred by the Council of Ministers, the report of the State Council’s Economic Committee and Majlis Al Shura’s report on it.

He appreciated efforts of the members, announcing that a joint session will be held between the State Council and Majlis Al Shura on Thursday to discuss the articles of dispute between the two councils on the draft law on the Living Aquatic Wealth and draft law on Selective Goods Tax.

The Head of the State Council’s Economic Committee presented a statement on the draft law on Selective Goods Tax.

He explained that the selective tax aims primarily to protect public health by increasing the tax on a number of consumer goods harmful to human health.

Public health

The State Council’s members stressed the importance of law in protecting public health by imposing a tax on goods harmful to human health and the environment.

The State Council is scheduled to hold its thirteenth session for the third annual sitting of the sixth term today, during which the two proposals submitted by the Education and Research Committee of the Council will be discussed, namely, ‘Strengthening the role of education in supporting the knowledge economy’ and, ‘Promoting the on Job Training System’, in addition to discussing the formation of a special committee to study the proposal ‘Language Policy in the Sultanate: Its Reality, Challenges, Development Mechanism and Activation’.
