EasyJet would convert 1,400 UK pilot licenses to Austrian ones as the British air carrier braces for a no-deal Brexit scenario.

“Depending on the outcome of the Brexit negotiations, UK-issued pilot licenses after the UK leaves the European Union (EU) could be no longer valid within the EU,” a spokesperson from the UK company told Air Transport World (ATW).

“That’s why we have worked with the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority’s [CAA] and Austro Control [Austrian Aviation Authority] to come up with a solution,” the spokesperson said, noting that new licensing process will start from November.

Meanwhile, licenses of UK-based crews in British operations do not have to undergo any changes, and Germany-registered pilots would move over to German licenses.

In the same vein, 130 of EasyJet’s UK-registered Airbus A319s/A320s would be transferred to Europe unit in Vienna.

“Besides those 113 aircraft, there will be 25 additional aircraft that will be transferred to the Austrian aviation register by the middle of next year,” Austro Control spokesperson Markus Pohanka told ATW.

By securing an EU air operator’s certificate in Austria, Europe unit would safeguard EasyJet’s network in the event that London and Brussels do not agree on new air transport agreement ahead of the deadline for the Brexit.
