Bahrain - Fines of up to BD20,000 and three-year jail sentences could be imposed on anyone caught misusing social media and other online platforms.

The penalties would apply to those who defame, insult or damage the reputations of others.

A BD50,000 fine was originally proposed, but that has been reduced by the Shura Council. If MPs approve the new punishments on Tuesday the amendment will be referred to His Majesty King Hamad for ratification.

A 20 per cent pay rise for civil servants will be voted on again by MPs on Tuesday. The Shura Council has already rejected the idea based on a government cost-cutting programme.
