Bahrain has food security indicators that enable it to issue monthly and yearly reports, helping decision makers predict food security status in the kingdom from various aspects, said Industry, Commerce and Tourism Minister Zayed Alzayani.
He said the Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry will assume the responsibility of improving the kingdom’s capabilities in order to achieve food security in line with His Majesty’s directives to launch a strategic national food production project and explore adequate solutions to achieve self-sufficiency.
This came in reply to a question by MP Abdulrahman Jamsheer on measures and decisions taken by the ministry to address shortage of foodstuff and basic goods and ways of deterring price manipulation.
Under the current exceptional circumstances and despite the availability of all food commodities in local markets, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Premier, issued directives to the ministry to ensure food stocks are sufficient for at least six months, in co-operation with relevant authorities.
Accordingly, a detailed study has been drawn up specifying 14 basic food items to be made available in emergency cases in accordance with the UN World Food Programme. Quantities of food items to be imported to cover no less than six months have also been identified, he pointed out.
