An American company and a Russia-based firm are intending to submit their offers to relevant authorities in Egypt for the establishment of nuclear reactors for peaceful uses, with electricity production capacity of up to 300 megawatts , Asharq Business reported on April 5th, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter.
Both firms are currently negotiating with Egypt’s Nuclear Power Plants Authority (NPPA) to take an official step for the construction of small modular reactors, with lenders to handle the financing process on concessional terms.
SMRs generate between 50 to 300 megawatts of power at lower cost than traditional reactors, and they are easy to transport and localize in remote locations.
On March 29th, the Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority (ENRRA) issued a permit to Russia’s Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation for the construction of the El-Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant’s 3rd unit.
