Tunisia - Electronic payment operations (E-PAIEMENT) have increased in number by 26%, to 12.5 million operations, and in value by 44%, to 831.3 million dinars, between 2021 and 2022, according to the "Bulletin No. 3 on payments in Tunisia" published, Tuesday, February 21, 2023, by the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT).
Similarly, the number of merchant sites has increased by 10%, from 1 436 sites in 2021 to 1 583 sites in 2022.
The electronic banking indicators also reveal that the number of electronic banking acceptance points will have 3,000 ATM/GAB operations in 2022 (up by 1% compared to 2021), 32.8 thousand Eftpos terminals (+10%) and 6.5 million bank cards (+8%).
According to the BCT bulletin, 25.31 million cheques were presented during the year 2022, recording an increase of 5% for a total amount of 118 386.68 million dinars (MD) (+16.8%). The rejection rate of cheques amounted to 1.55% in number and 2.44% in value.
In addition, the number of bank transfers reached 32.4 million in 2022 (+6.3%) for an amount of 46683.15 MD (+11.5%) with a rejection rate of 0.13% in number and 0.12% in value.
As for direct debits, they reached 6.19 million operations in 2022 (i.e. a drop of 1.8%), representing a global amount of 19 650.14 MD with a rejection rate of 50.82% in number and 8.84% in value.
