Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly chaired a meeting to follow up on a project to manufacture an Egyptian electric vehicle (EV), the Cabinet stated on February 21st.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Ayman Ashour, President of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology (ASRT) Mahmoud Saqr, Dean of the Applied Research Department at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) Mohamed El Ghamry, and Head of the Automotive Engineering Department at the Faculty of Engineering of Ain Shams University Mohamed Abdel Aziz.

During the meeting, El Ghamry reviewed the components of EV that will be manufactured locally for the first time. He expected high returns from this project, whether in terms of investment or job opportunities.

He indicated that a complex will be established to manufacture EVs on an area of 50,000 square meters, and arrangements will be made to deepen the local component in mechanical design, motors, and electronic circuits, to reach 100%.

El Ghamry revealed that various model of EVs will be manufactured to meet the demand of the Egyptian market.

Meanwhile, AASTMT’s Dean said that manufacturing the first electric car with 60% of local components will begin within six months, adding the vehicle's local components will be raised to 90% in 24 months from the start of production, through a research project funded by the ASRT.
