Manama: Bahrain is studying a new plan to attract more foreign investments, it was announced yesterday.

The Cabinet, chaired by His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, scrutinised the proposal that aims to woo investments in specified sectors.

The Premier assigned the Industry, Commerce and Tourism Ministry to discuss it with the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry as well as other competent authorities.

Bahrain Polytechnic is to be restructured under the recommendations of the Civil Service Bureau.

It will now have a chief executive and two deputies in charge of academic affairs and resources and information respectively.

Each will have three directorates under their authority, while the directorate of quality and assessment will remain under the chief executive.

The Deputy Premier and Civil Service Council Vice Chairman submitted a report in this regard to the Cabinet for approval.

The private sector has employed 11,000 Bahraini jobseekers over the first six months of this year, according to a report on employment trends submitted by Labour and Social Development Minister Jameel Humaidan.

It surveyed 3,500 Bahraini jobseekers, who benefited from training programmes over the period.

Average salary of Bahrainis in the private sector grew by 3.6 per cent to BD407 whereas Bahrainis working in the public sector are paid an average BD691 monthly, it said.

The survey showed the unemployment rate at 4.2pc.

The overall workforce in Bahrain stands at 764,000, with the private sector employing 65pc of them.

The Premier gave directives to offer more incentives to encourage employers to recruit Bahraini jobseekers, said Cabinet Secretary-General Dr Yasser Al Nasser.
