A high-level multilateral meeting was held on Monday in the presence of Egyptian government representatives and senior officials to discuss economic impacts of the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak on the country.
The participants were Minister of Planning and Economic Developmentmet Hala El-Said, Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Aly Meselhi, Minister of Social Solidarity Nevine El-Kabbaj, Deputy Chairperson of the Federation of Egyptian Industries Tarek Tawfik, President of the National Council for Women Maya Morsy, and representatives from the Ministry of Manpower.
El-Said stressed the government’s desire to support those affected by the coronavirus in line with its precautionary measures to halt the virus’ spread, noting that Covid-19 crisis is global.
For her part, El-Kabbaj said her ministry has databases of poor families and informal workers, with the exception of the tourism sector, which includes about 750,000 workers.
The Ministry of Social Solidarity also has a database of volunteers working with civil organisations, El-Kabbaj said, adding that there are 400,000 volunteers classified according to location, activity, and age.
For his part, Supply Minister Meselhi said the government should prioritise the most affected sectors to ensure they receive timely support.
