MANAMA: A new confidential and secure electronic voting system is set to be introduced when Parliament resumes sessions on Sunday following a five-month recess.

His Majesty King Hamad yesterday issued an order convening the National Assembly for its third session of the fifth legislative term.

Parliament Speaker Fouzia Zainal was briefed on the details during a presentation by secretary general Rashid Bunajma.

Further details on actual attendance as an option were revealed in line with Covid-19 precautionary measures.

The opening ceremony will be held remotely followed by a Shura Council session which will take place with the physical presence of its members to elect first and second vice-chairmen, while Parliament will hold a procedural session online.

Ms Zainal said the session will be exceptional due to key issues affecting citizens’ lives amidst the pandemic.

Shura Council secretary general Osama Al Asfoor said all preparations for the session have been finalised keeping in mind the Covid situation.

The Bahrain Institute for Political Development and the Bahrain Centre for Strategic, International and Energy Studies (Derasat) have launched a survey on training and awareness needs for the upcoming parliamentary and municipal elections.
