Bahrain is set to roll out the new wage protection system for private sector employers starting on May 1, 2021, the country’s Minister of Labour and Social Development Jameel bin Mohammed Ali Humaidan said.

The system, which will ensure that workers will receive their salaries on time, will be implemented in three stages.

The first phase will oblige companies who employ 500 workers or more to comply with the regulation, while the second phase will cover employers with 50 to 499 workers.

Organisations with one to 49 employees will be covered in the third phase, which is scheduled to begin on January 1, 2022.

However, a grace period of six months will be extended to employers, according to a statement from the state-run Bahrain News Agency.

Ali Humaidan said the decision to implement a wage protection system is “testament to the kingdom of Bahrain’s commitment to protecting the rights of workers.”

The programme will also support “concerted efforts aimed at combatting trafficking in persons and forced labour by pre-emptively identifying suspicious cases.”

He warned that employers who fail to pay monthly salaries of their staff on time will face penalties.
