Preparations of kindergartens and nurseries to reopen for the new academic year in September have been discussed.

During a meeting held remotely yesterday between representatives of 97 kindergartens and senior officials from the Education Ministry, precautionary measures for the safe return of children amid Covid-19 restrictions were highlighted.

Education Ministry assistant under-secretary for private and continuous education Jaffar Al Shaikh praised the establishments for their co-operation during these extraordinary times, especially the kindergartens that have cancelled, reduced or facilitated the payment of fees within efforts to lessen the burden on parents.

“The ministry is preparing a regulatory circular that will govern the operations of kindergartens during the new academic year,” he said in a statement yesterday.

“This document will be circulated to all establishments soon, taking into account all possible scenarios as well as precautionary and preventive measures.

“It is crucial to ensure all requirements are completed for the renewal of licences which include providing a certificate from an accredited engineering office in Bahrain proving that the kindergarten building adheres to safety and security specifications.”

According to Education Ministry kindergarten directorate acting director Dr Lubna Sulaibeekh, the development of children during the kindergarten stage was crucial in preparation for primary education.

She also highlighted the efforts by kindergartens to provide remote learning for children during the extraordinary times while also urging the establishments to provide their operational plans for the coming academic year to the directorate.

Kindergarten requirements were also discussed during the meeting along with the necessary support and investment needed to ensure the sustainable continuity of the sector.

The GDN reported yesterday that preparations of private schools to reopen for the new academic year were highlighted during a meeting held between representatives of 77 private schools and senior ministry officials.

Students in Bahrain’s government schools will return to their classes on September 16, while administrative and technical staff will resume work on September 6.

Education Minister Dr Majid Al Nuaimi had said that private schools will be given time from mid-August to early September to reopen.

MPs last week said they were planning to summon Dr Al Nuaimi over plans to reopen schools amid concerns over the spread of Covid-19.
