Dubai: Zayed University on Wednesday unveiled its new Fabrication Lab on their Dubai campus which comes with a 3D printer and laser cutting tools that will both be operated by a robot
The lab, which was opened to coincide with UAE Innovation Week, will allow students and researchers to print out modelled designs with the 3D printer or its robotic manufacturing. The lab will also allow students to use existing objects and to change them into different styles for interior or product designs.
“The planning for the Fabrication Lab began four years ago and now culminates in the introduction of a fabrication space that meets industry standards and will equip our students with the skills they need in employment after graduation,” said Professor Reyadh AlMehaideb, vice-president of Zayed University.
“Current undergraduate students of different disciplines will gradually be involved in the operation of the robot and other devices and I understand that a graduate programme proposal has been developed that will specifically focus on the Fabrication Lab and related technologies, with an emphasis on entrepreneurship and industry partnerships,” he added.
The lab’s robot — Kuku Agilus — was manufactured in Germany and weighs 3.5 tonnes sitting in a glass cell. Among its features are a high-speed spindle for milling, vacuum grippers, and hot wire cutters.
Ann-Maree Reaney, dean of the CACE, the group who designed the robot, said the lab would create a new generation of innovators for the UAE.
“The Fabrication Lab is an example of the cutting-edge technology utilised at Zayed University to create innovative teaching and learning environments for our students. CACE aims to prepare a new generation of creative thinkers — graduates who are leaders and innovators in the field and who will be employed in the growing art and design sector.
“These designers and artists will contribute significantly to the economy of the UAE and the future of our global community,” she added.
