Workers of an industrial contracting company have ended a protest over poor living conditions following the intervention of authorities.

The Indian and Nepalese men had been demanding better living conditions at their camp in Sitra.

The Labour and Social Development Ministry said last night that the workers’ demands had been met.

“In response to what was circulated about the workers of a private company recently striking at the company’s site, a number of officials from the Labour and Social Development Ministry, upon receiving a notification of the incident, visited the site and communicated with workers’ representatives and the management of the company concerned,” said a statement.

“These efforts, which were carried out in co-operation and co-ordination with the ministries of Interior and Health and the Supreme Council for the Environment, resulted in the formation of a joint committee from the company, the Labour and Social Development Ministry and the relevant authorities.

“The aim was to contain the situation, address the negatives and meet the shortcomings and services demanded by the workers.”

The ministry added that the company had already started correcting the workers’ conditions and meeting their demands, including services provided in the company’s housing. It also noted that the workers had agreed to end the strike and return to work.

The ministry underlined the company’s commitment to labour regulations and legislation in Bahrain, and adherence to the requirements and specifications suitable for housing and a decent and healthy work environment.

“The situation between the company and workers has returned to normal,” the ministry statement added.
