BEIRUT: After two consecutive months of testing, authorities Saturday declared that water in Beirut and Mount Lebanon is safe to drink. Chemical tests prove that the water doesnt constitute any harm to health and [abides by] the international quality of safe drinking water, a statement by the Beirut and Mount Lebanon Water Authority read. The statement added that tests run on municipal water in November and December measured the presence of chemicals and bacteria and results were clear. There have been concerns that the onset of the rainy season could lead to water contamination, which could result in waterborne disease and illnesses such as diarrhea and cholera. Activists have expressed fears that the ongoing garbage crisis could increase water toxicity, but Saturdays results would appear to ease these concerns.
