ROME- The UAE has participated in the third edition of the Rome MED Mediterranean Dialogues held here from 30th November to 2nd December under the theme "MED 2017 Beyond Turmoil. A Positive Agenda."Angelino Alfano, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Italy, opened the meeting in the presence of Italian President, Sergio Mattarella, Lebanese President, Michel Aoun, heads of state and government, prime ministers and leaders of multilateral organisations.
The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Italian Institute for International Political Studies co-hosted the event, which attracted over 800 leaders in politics, economy, business and finance and top 80 representatives of think-tanks and international institutions as well as thought leaders, researchers and experts from 56 countries.
Rome MED builds upon four pillars: Shared Prosperity, Shared Security, Migration, and Civil Society and Culture. Debates on these topics are intended to complement analyses of current challenges with new ideas and suggestions to scale-up economic co-operation, overcome regional rivalries and conflicts, and ensure that adequate incentives for sustainable development are set in motion.
The 3rd edition of ROME MED Mediterranean Dialogues aims at drafting a "positive agenda" for the Mediterranean by stimulating debate and promoting new ideas, rethinking traditional approaches and addressing shared challenges at both the regional and the international level.
Ahmed Abdul Rahman Al Jarman, Assistant Minister of Foreign and International Cooperation for Political Affairs, led the UAE's delegation at the event.
The UAE official met Paolo Glisenti, Commissioner-General for the Italian Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, on the sidelines of the meeting and discussed ways of sharing knowledge and expertise in the organisation of international exhibitions so as to serve mutual interests.
Al Jarman invited Italy to have a strong presence in Expo 2020 Dubai as both countries share the objectives and aspirations of its theme "Connecting Minds, Creating the Future." He said the UAE was looking forward to working with Italy to deliver an exceptional event that leaves a sustained legacy for the future generations and highlights both countries' capabilities in areas of research and development, innovation in renewable energy, transport, environment, technology and education.
The Italian official praised the Emirati-Italian strategic partnership under the ever-growing bilateral ties. He further expressed Italy's desire to share its experience with the UAE to organise a unique expo that connects Milano Expo 2015 with Expo 2020 Dubai.
