Ensuring the price stability of dairy products in Bahrain was the focus of a meeting between the government and representatives of dairy companies yesterday.
Industry, Commerce and Tourism Minister Zayed Alzayani stressed the importance of the availability of dairy products – one of the main consumer goods – to ensure the smooth movement of commodities in the local market.
The meeting was held as part of efforts to ensure the security of local market needs while also meeting consumers’ requirements for basic commodities and products, in co-ordination between the ministry and concerned parties.
The GDN previously reported on Monday that the prices of Saudi dairy and juice products increased by 15 to 40 per cent in Bahrain due to a reported rise in production costs.
Juice prices increased by nearly 15pc, while milk, cheese and cream went up by 18 to 40pc.
“The continued availability of these products is vital as they are among the main consumer goods to ensure the smooth flow of commodity movement in local markets,” said Mr Alzayani.
“The efforts to support national food products of all kinds continues within efforts to expand their production.
“It is important to strengthen the co-operation between the ministry and the food companies to overcome challenges that may impact the movement in the market.
“This is in line with efforts made to protect consumers, provide all food commodities and ensure that their prices are not tampered with.”
In September, Saudi companies raised milk, laban and yoghurt prices following a Saudi Cabinet decision to scrap 50pc subsidies for dairy companies.
