Seven companies are bidding for the consultancy services contract of Bahrain’s ambitious metro project.

The planned 109km rail-based urban transit network to be built at an estimated cost of between $1-$2 billion aims to ease traffic congestion, and will be completed in a phased manner.

The GDN reported previously that phase one comprises two lines with an estimated length of 28.6km and includes 20 stations with two interchanges.

“The Transportation and Telecommunications Ministry is looking to engage a technical consultant to study the feasibility of extending Bahrain metro corridor from King Hamad Railway Station in Ramli, A’ali to the new Sports City and the International Exhibition Centre in Sakhir,” said the Tender Board yesterday.

“The broad scope of the work includes evaluating different alternative corridors, study station allocation, concept and preliminary design of corridor and cost estimate of the project.

”The ministry revealed that among the bidders are four companies from Bahrain: Consolidated Engineering Company Khatib and Alami Foreign Branch Company, Mohamed Salahuddin Consulting Engineering Bureau, AECOM Middle East Limited Foreign Branches Company and IDOM Consulting Engineering Architecture SAU Foreign Branch.

Abu Dhabi-based Rina Consulting Spa and Sener Ingenieria y Sistemas and Dar Al Handash Consultants (both from Saudi Arabia) are the other bidders.

The highest bid was submitted by IDOM Consulting Engineering Architecture SAU Foreign Branch (BD598,000) and the lowest by Rina Consulting Spa (BD165,000).
