More than 100 major traders have agreed to ensure that prices of basic commodities remain stable during Ramadan.

Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) food wealth committee chairman Khalid Al Amin is confident that available stocks will be enough to meet increased holy month demands and beyond.

He said a total of 105 traders had already signed an online document to show their commitment not to increase prices during Ramadan, which is expected to start on April 13.

The announcement came as Mr Al Amin yesterday chaired a virtual meeting with representatives of hypermarkets and food companies to discuss preparations for the coming weeks.

“We will not tolerate any tampering with prices and it is our job to protect the reputation of traders and the welfare of consumers,” said Mr Al Amin.

“Traders have to be straightforward and honest and anyone who fails to live by that code whether during Ramadan or any other time, should be dealt with seriously.

“Markets and shopping centres witness huge movement as people tend to buy commodities in preparation for the holy month.

“We have stocks for Ramadan items available from major traders for more than two months, while stored items in general could last for a year.

“Promotions are also intensified to attract customers, which are also being monitored by us and the authorities concerned, to ensure fair competition.”

Consumer experts predict that demand for meat, chicken, vegetables, fruit, rice and dairy products will increase by around 50 per cent during Ramadan from past experience.

“Prices are stable and shouldn’t increase as the desired items are already here and will be offered at competitive prices,” added Mr Al Amin, who is a top fruits and vegetables trader.

“We already have 1,700 tonnes of cooking oils and 1,900 tonnes of sugar. And, 3,500 tonnes of fruits and vegetables will be made available daily from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey, India, the Philippines and South Africa, amongst others.

“As for poultry and other meat products, local companies and importers are ready and prepared with live stocks, chilled and frozen products.

“I am in direct contact with traders to ensure things are going as planned and the Industry, Commerce and Tourism Ministry’s consumer protection directorate is continuously supporting us to help supervise the market.”

Bahrain Flour Mills Company will also present multiple basic products like flour and seeds to 685 traditional and 74 general bakeries, the meeting heard.

Productive families will also have a share in the market with the production of spices and sauces besides offering items and merchandise to mark mid-Ramadan, known as Gurgaoun, a unique children’s holiday.

Other traders were also present during the online meeting.
