Qatar-based doctor booking service Meddy Inc has been acquired by African health tech company Helium Health, which is embarking on its first expansion outside the continent.

Nigerian-based Helium, which also operates in Ghana, Liberia, Senegal, Kenya and Uganda, announced that it had acquired Meddy Inc, which also has operations in the UAE.

The company said investment in digital infrastructure will account for 30 percent of healthcare investment in the GCC between 2023-2030.

Meddy’s CEO Haris Aghadi and COO Abed Alkarim Khattab will join Helium’s leadership team and

Helium will deploy its electronic medical records (EMR) technology and healthcare financial solutions across the GCC healthcare market, the company said.

“Whilst the GCC’s healthcare market is more mature than Africa’s and has a higher technology penetration, the technology present in the region is more siloed. All regional stakeholders will benefit from Helium’s robust and interconnected suite of Digital Health products,” Helium said.

Helium was founded in 2016 and works with 500 healthcare facilities and 7,000 medical professionals and facilitates 300,000 patient visits per month, including private and public healthcare institutions, in West Africa.

Meddy Inc, founded 2015, has facilitated 200,000 bookings, to help healthcare providers generate approximately $130 million in billings in Qatar and the UAE. The company has raised $1.8 million from angel investors.
