A proposal to provide Tamkeen support to traditional cafés and restaurants in Manama and Muharraq was presented yesterday.

The move, spearheaded by Parliament services committee vice-chairwoman Dr Sawsan Kamal, aims to help outlets hit by the pandemic.

Under the proposal, which will be now reviewed by the relevant committee, the same financial support could also extend to nearby buildings provided they were turned into tourist facilities.

“The proposal would give necessary support to the economy through preserving heritage and making investments in the sector attractive,” said Dr Kamal.

“Traditional cafés and restaurants first would benefit and also surrounding buildings,” she added. “It will also, in return, see old buildings saved rather than used as accommodation for bachelor labourers, distorting their true identity.”
