Muscat: Omantel showcased latest tech products during a media tour at its headquarter in Airport Heights in Muscat on Wednesday. The tour covered Omantel Innovation Labs, Omantel Museum, Innovation Oasis, and Smart Store.
During the tour the Sultanate of Oman’s major telecom services provider, put stress on technical innovation and creativity as parts of Omantel's culture of entrepreneurship and creative environment. It seeks to encourage its employees to evolve and gain new heights. “Omantel's role is not limited to enriching the social and economic fabric of the country through its day-to-day operations, it also promotes digital inclusion, entrepreneurship, and pushes the boundaries of global innovation,” a statement from Omantel said.Omantel Innovation Labs mainly focuses on developing entrepreneurship skills among young people and accelerating the growth of emerging technology companies in the country across five technology areas: 5G technology, Internet of things, cybersecurity, subscriber experience concept, and big data. The innovation labs, which are located on a large area of 1,100 square meters at Omantel’s head office in Muscat, will organise, participate and host many activities to achieve the company’s vision, goals and ambitions related to innovation.
Commenting on the inauguration of these laboratories, Talal bin Saeed al Maamari, CEO of Omantel, said, “In the company, we seek to support and benefit from new ideas and technologies, maintain leadership and stimulate innovation in the local market. Therefore, we need to utilise our resources optimally and create an environment in which our goals are compatible with national goals related to digital transformation.The guests were acquainted with six companies running their businesses from the innovations labs.
The media team was also introduced to Omantel Museum which has ancient telecommunication devices used in the country and the region. They were briefed about the smart store which is equipped with in-store cameras that capture the movements of shoppers in the aisles, while smart sensors on the shelves will track the products that shoppers put in their baskets. The items selected by shoppers will be added to their virtual shopping cart through an application developed by Omantel and the value of these purchases will be deducted from the customers’ mobile wallet when they leave the store and the payment receipt is sent to them electronically.Omantel seeks to advance the retail sector's virtual reality orientation by expanding its services that help enable the digital economy by deploying smart technologies and improving subscriber experiences. This project, which takes advantage of Omantel's digital technologies and capabilities, underscores Oman Oil's values of innovation, customer focus and mutual support, and reflects the company's commitment to providing high quality services and products to all its customer base. This move also demonstrates the efforts of Oman Oil Company to provide a safe shopping experience from one place in addition to building long-term partnerships with various major companies in support of the economic diversification efforts undertaken by the government.
