The Special Economic Zone Authority at Duqm (SEZAD) has announced that it has extended the deadline by about a month, for the second time in a row, for submitting documents to comply with the request of companies participating in the bidding process for the fishing port at Duqm.
'Upon the request of participating companies in the bidding process, the duration has been extended due to the current wordwide circumstances of coronavirus (COVID-19) spread,' SEZAD said in a tweet.
Earlier in January this year, SEZAD floated a tender inviting bids for developing, managing and operating the major fishing port and related investment projects in the Special Economic Zone in Duqm.
One month later, it announced the extension of the last date of submitting the documents by a month to March 25 on the request of participating companies. However, due to concerns related to the spread of COVID-19, the authority has decided to again extend the deadline by a month.
As per the authority, the last date for submitting the tender documents has been extended to April 23. SEZAD will also organise a field visit on April 7, where interested corporates would be able to observe the location of the project, according to the tweet.
The fishing port at Duqm will be the largest of its-kind port in the sultanate with 10m depth, 3.3km long two water breakers, a 1.3km fixed dock, and six floating anchors. In addition, the port includes an area allocated for tourism purposes that are associated with the port as well as paved roads connecting the port to the fisheries zone and other projects within the Special Economic Zone.
As per industry experts, this proposed fishing port will play a key role towards diversification of the sources of income, providing job opportunities for Omanis, promoting the re-export sector, transferring modern technology and creating an added value to the fisheries sector in Duqm.
