MUSCAT: The Sultanate will be the focus country at the Partnership Summit 2011, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), and scheduled to be held in Mumbai, India from January 24.
The annual summit will serve as a platform for governments, businessmen and civil societies to address key global issues, and India's partnership role as a large emerging economy in evolving roadmaps for the next decade

The two-day summit will showcase the development taking place in Oman and will also provide opportunities for Omani businesses to strengthen cooperation with their counterparts in India and other participating countries as well.

This announcement was made at the press conference addressed by Nisreen Ahmed Jaffer, director-general of Omani Centre for Investment Promotion and Export Development (Ociped) yesterday. The briefing was also was attended by Jamal Tawfiq Aziz, CEO of Sohar FreeZone, Maurice Girgis, Duqm project advisor, Ministry of National Economy, and Pankaj Khimji, chairman of the Omani-Indian Joint Business Council.

"Oman has been participating in the event on a regular basis and this year the Omani delegation will be led by Maqbool Ali Sultan, minister of commerce and industry and the chairman of Ociped. The delegation will include Salem bin Nasser Al Ismaily, CEO of Ociped, Khalil bin Abdullah Al Khonji, chairman of Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry, senior officials from the government and the private sectors," Nisreen Ahmed Jaffer pointed out.

Girgis said that the summit will highlight the diversity of economies of different countries.
"Duqm project is strategically located. In fact, Duqm area is rich in non-organic, mineral resources and fisheries. All these aspects will be highlighted during the summit," Girgis added.

Five-year plan

Maqbool will address the summit, followed by a panel discussion on business opportunities in Oman which includes infrastructure, industry, tourism, education, healthcare and information technology.
The panel discussion will also highlight major developments and projects that will be implemented during the current five-year development plan which has commenced this year. Ociped, in close coordination with CII, will also organise an exhibition and business-to-business meeting for the Omani private sector.

Nisreen Ahmed Jaffer explained that the Sultanate will host a cultural event which will feature folk dances from various parts of the country by 15-member troupe. "A gala dinner will be hosted by Ociped for the over 1,000 delegates."

Aziz stressed that participating in a similar event would not only have an impact on the economy of the Sultanate but also create more business opportunities.

1,200 delegates

The event will bring together diverse stakeholders from across the world to deliberate on the nature and strategies for collective actions on global economy and address challenges of poverty alleviation and human development.

"Indeed, it is a platform for governments, businesses and civil societies to address key global issues and establish business networking," said Nisreen.

"Economic and commercial exchanges between India and Oman started since centuries. A series of high-level visits in the last few years have helped create a political environment that is conductive for expansion of economic ties. Many agreements between these countries have created an attractive environment to do business with Indian companies.

"The trade between the two countries has increased substantially in the recent years and India is one of the leading investing countries in Oman. Besides, there are large of Oman's investments in India. The Partnership Summit 2011 will be a platform for strategic marketing initiatives for Oman," Nisreen added.
"Around 1,200 delegates are expected to participate in the event from over 30 countries. The theme of the event is 'New Partnerships for Economic Resurgence: The Global Imperative'," Nisreen informed.

This partnership summit is an annual event organised by the Confederation of India and this year is in its seventeenth year.

The summit has regularly featured head of states and governments, ministers, senior bureaucrats, academicians and chief executives.
