Manama: Bahrain’s businesses hardest hit by the coronavirus downturn have been given a three-month extended reprieve.
The government stepped in to shoulder 50 per cent of the salaries of insured Bahrainis working in these private sector businesses.
The measure, which covers July, August and September, was announced during the weekly Cabinet session, chaired remotely by His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa.
His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Premier, attended the virtual session.
The government has already shouldered the full salaries of Bahrainis working in the private sector for April, May and June.
The move followed the government’s consultation with the legislative branch and the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
It is in line with the directives of His Majesty King Hamad to harness all national efforts to mitigate the fallout of the pandemic and protect citizens and residents’ health and safety.
The three-month half-pay disbursement will be in accordance with the terms and conditions set by the Labour and Social Development Minister in co-ordination with relevant authorities.
The government will also foot the utility bills of subscribed citizens for their primary homes for three months, starting from July, provided they do not exceed last year’s bills for the same period.
Tamkeen will also support hardest hit economic sectors as part of the terms and conditions set by its board.
