Dubai: Police in Sharjah are warning motorists not to park illegally - or else face a Dh700 fine.
Major Abdul Rahman Khater, Director of the Traffic Awareness Department at Sharjah Police, said motorists who take advantage of the parking lots in front of mosques to avoid paying the parking fees, “will be slapped with a Dh500 fine and four black points, as per Article 41 of the Traffic Law.”
Major Khater explained that motorists tend to illegally park near mosques during Taraweeh prayers, which is the special prayers offered only during Ramadan after the last obligatory prayers of the day.
Motorists who park in the middle of roads and block traffic do not only cause traffic jams, but also hinders ambulances and other first-responders, such as the Civil Defence.
“Drivers that block traffic will also be fined Dh200, as per Article 67 of the Traffic Act on blocking movement of vehicles,” he said.
Sharjah Police have intensified their campaign to raise awareness of the public about the dangers of exploiting the parking space in front of mosques during prayers, and have distributed pamphlets to the public in Arabic, English and Urdu.
The awareness campaign was also spread on Sharjah Police’s official Twitter account, urging motorists to park their vehicles in designated parking areas and to abide by traffic rules.
