US technology giant Microsoft Corporation has reportedly agreed to purchase software developer platform GitHub, as it moves to build more open-source software, according to reports.

While no financial terms have been disclosed, the deal, which is likely to worth billions of dollars, is expected to be announced as soon as Monday, Bloomberg News reported on Sunday.

The acquisition deal would expand Microsoft’s portfolio of programming tools and collaboration efforts, as the Washington-based company moves away from dependence on Windows operating system to a more in-house development on Linux, Bloomberg said.

Microsoft approached the San Francisco company over the last few years, but both companies proceeded recently to discuss partnership and later on they discussed the acquisition.

Business Insider reported on Friday that both companies were in talks.

GitHub is one of the most essential tools utilised in coders, with “27 million software developers working on 80 million repositories of code,” while major corporations, including Microsoft, use it repositories to store their corporate codes and to collaborate.
