United Arab Emirates-based contractor ASGC has been appointed by master developer Meraas to construct the new Dubai Cruise Terminal at the Dubai Harbour waterfront development, it was announced on Tuesday.

ASGC said in a press statement that the terminal, located between Bluewaters and Palm Jumeirah developments, would be the region’s first dedicated cruise port.

With a combined floor area of 300,000 square feet, Dubai Cruise Terminal would be able to accommodate two mega cruise ships concurrently and more than 15,000 visitors, the statement said.

ASGC didn’t disclose the contract value or completion timeline for the project, but said the scope of work includes construction of two main cruise terminal buildings on a one-kilometre long quay, service buildings and a central unit building with all associated fit-out works, external works, and all fixtures, fittings and equipment.

In May 2018, Meraas had announced that Dubai Cruise Terminal would open in October 2020. The statement said the terminal would become Dubai’s main cruise terminal and all cruise ships visiting Port Rashid would be redirected gradually from its opening date.

The statement also noted that Meraas has signed a strategic partnership agreement with Carnival Corporation to transform Dubai into a major regional maritime tourism hub.

In December 2018, local English language newspaper Khaleej Times reported that Dubai is targeting one million cruise tourists by 2020 as part of Dubai Tourism Strategy 2020.
