Chinese multinational Huawei is confident of rolling out 5G in Bahrain within 3-4 months of the availability of spectrum, a top official has said.

Huawei Bahrain chief executive John Lu Yuedong told the GDN that, “In Bahrain, once spectrum is available, Huawei is ready to support operators to launch 5G service to keep the country in a leading position in ICT sector.

“Because the cell tower site locations are there, and the existing base stations can be upgraded to 5G technology, once spectrum is available, it will not take more than 3-4 months,” he said.

Mr Yuedong was speaking on the sidelines of the ninth MEET ICT conference, where the global provider of ICT infrastructure and smart devices has signed up as the 5G Strategic Partner.

“We are committed to working with our customers and partners here in the kingdom to pave the way to a smart and safe country.”

The firm has pledged to globally invest a total of more than $100 billion into research and development over the next five years.

“Huawei has already become the world leader in 5G with more than 2,570 patents and will remain ahead of the competition for at least 12 to 18 months.

“We have ensured 30-plus commercial contracts as of today, and are shipping over 40,000 5G base stations, in addition to being among the first companies to provide full E2E 5G portfolio ready since last year,” he added.

According to him, Huawei Mate X, launched last month during MWC2019 in Barcelona is the world’s first 5G foldable AI phone.

Huawei has been partnering with BTECH through MEET ICT and Bitex for the last four years, with an objective of supporting the growth of ICT sector in Bahrain.
