Bahrain - A new agreement with the world’s top hospital will put advanced medical technology and expertise at the fingertips of doctors and patients at Bahrain’s oldest private hospital.

American Mission Hospital (AMH) has signed a first phase deal with Mayo Clinic, and is set to become an affiliated Mayo partner within the next six months.

The Mayo Clinic in Rochester topped Newsweek’s 2022 list of the world’s best hospitals, based on patient survey results, hospital recommendations from more than 80,000 healthcare professionals, and key performance metrics such as patient safety, hygiene measures and quality of care.

The not-for-profit organisation treats more than 1.3 million patients from 130 countries every year.

“AMH signed a first phase deal with Mayo Clinic to align its development strategy alongside Mayo’s ‘Patient First and Always’ strategy to develop quality, leadership and governance on the road to becoming an Affiliate Mayo partner here in Bahrain,” said AMH chief executive Dr George Cheriyan.

“The King Hamad American Mission Hospital (KHAMH) will be the epicentre of this partnership that has evolved from a 120-year history of service to the people of Bahrain.”

The partnership was facilitated by Bahrain’s Economic Development Board and the anticipated three phases towards becoming an affiliate partner are set to be completed in the next six months.

Under the agreement, AMH and Mayo Clinic will share medical technology and expertise, including visits by top doctors from the US to Bahrain to spearhead the introduction of new initiatives and the start of new specialised departments at the KHAMH. They will also collaborate on education, practice and research.

“As the hospital starts new departments in the areas of Nephrology, Baromedicine, Assisted Reproductive Technology, and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, these world-class collaborations are going to help us a lot,” a spokesperson for the hospital told the GDN.

“Not only do these tie-ups facilitate valuable consultations with top experts, but also bring global expertise and cutting-edge medical technology into Bahrain.”

In addition, AMH patients are expected to be able to consult doctors at Mayo Clinic remotely, under the framework of the partnership.

The state-of-the-art KHAMH in A’ali is the latest medical facility by the 120-year-old not-for-profit AMH, and was inaugurated last week by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, on behalf of His Majesty King Hamad.

The AMH opened its first facility in Bahrain on January 26, 1903, and the new KHAMH is equipped with 125 beds, women and children ward, operating rooms, intensive care units, a 20-bed dialysis unit, advanced laboratories, radiology centre, simulation rooms, library and lecture hall.
