Iran exported 2.88 million tons of iron ore granules worth $199.2 million in the first two months of the current Iranian year (started March 21).

The figures indicate a 9.2-percent growth and a 9.1-percent decline in terms of value and weight respectively compared with those of the corresponding period of last year, which were $182.41 million and 3.17 million tons.

Iran's iron ore granule has a purity of less than 40 percent.

China has been the main customer of Iran's iron ore granules in recent years, importing more than 95 percent of the product.

Pakistan, the UAE, Turkmenistan and Iraq were other export destinations of Iran's iron ore granule in the first two months of the current year.

Figures show 85 percent of Iran's iron ores are extracted from the country's large mines.

The Iranian private sector plans to produce up to 14 million tons of the product per annum.

Iran's iron ore reserves amount to 5.1 billion tons, of which 2.8 billion tons are proven.

In 2013, Iran was the fourth main exporter of iron ore to China after Australia, Brazil and South Africa.

Last year, hematite ore constituted the largest portion of Iran's non-oil exports.

According to a report released by Iranian Mines & Mining Industries Development & Renovation Organization in January, Jalalabad Mine of Zarand in Kerman province produced 755,593 tons of iron ore granules in the first nine months of last year.

Jalalabad Mine also produced 90,943 tons of iron ore granules during Nov. 22-Dec. 21, 2013.

During the nine-month period, iron ore extraction from the mine stood at 3.04 million tons, while 475,049 tons of iron ore were extracted during Nov. 22-Dec. 21, 2013.
