The Egyptian government extended by two years the timeline of the state’s transition from being the solo player in the electricity market to a regulator, according to a Cabinet statement.
The privatization program also includes separating power generation from transmission and distribution, the Cabinet added.
Under the sector-related 2015 bill, the state-owned electricity companies should complete the transition to being market regulators by 2023, which is now extended to 2025.
The Cabinet approved in June to keep the subsidy on home electricity bills until fiscal year 2024/2025 due to the economic fallout from the COVID-19 outbreak.
The ministry announced in March the full execution of projects amounting to EGP 230 million.
