JEDDAH: The announcement of an independent body for entertainment has been welcomed as a "move in the right direction" by artists and citizens.
Social media was abuzz with the news on Sunday, with a tweeter saying "Entertainment authority is actually a youth authority," local media reported.
Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman on Saturday announced the establishment of General Authority for Entertainment while announcing the reshuffle.
"This is great and amazing news. It is a result of Vision 2030, announced by Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman," Khalid Al-Harbi, renowned Saudi actor and drama writer, was quoted as saying by media.
He said the content of entertainment will play a big role. "Much care and attention will be required on the content. However, the goal should be to make people happy and lessen their burden," he said. "The aim should be to stop citizens from traveling abroad for entertainment."
Rayan Thiqa, actor, called the move a promising step. "We need to get rid of bureaucracy. We should have an investment mentality to run these bodies without depending on the government budget," he said.
Ahmad Al-Juaid, a tourist guide, said the Kingdom is serious about the implementation of projects and realization of the objectives of the vision.
Netizens, meanwhile, posted messages like the move has "overshadowed many other decisions," and "a decision long overdue."
Some tweeters described Jeddah, Alkhobar, Abha, Namas and Taif as the most attractive cities in the world to draw tourists. Some tweeted that the youths were deprived of entertainment activities for years as they always face the obstacle of the sign, "For families only."
